JOINT EVIDENCE: my name on auto lease <--> adding my husband's name on registration?

Hi all,

I'll be eligible for filing I-751 by the end of this year. We have a car with joint title but we're planning to sell it asap as it's getting more mechanical problems then it used to be.

I'm going to lease/finance a car but my husband doesn't have a good credit, so I'm planning to have only my name on the lease/finance papers. My question is, can I add my husband's name onto the auto registration without revising the lease papers ('coz we don't wanna run his credit check)? We don't have a house so basically this car will be our only joint asset.

Thanks :)

Just make a copy of the current lease that you have, even if you are not going to have the car anymore. It still proves that you had a vehicle together. And last time I checked, unless you are the lean holder on the vehicle (meaning you own the vehicle, paid off) you cant add any names on the registration. Also, get joint car insurance together, thats proof of bona fide marriage.

edit: the only way to add him to the registration is to make him a co-sponsor. Your intrest rate will most likely go up since he has bad credit though.

Thanks for your reply. My concern is whether they'd need CURRENT joint evidences - would they check with DMV to see if the title is current?

From my understanding, yes you do need evidences. I'm sure you can use some of your old proof and send it, but to be on the safe side, send current things, im sure you both have a joint bank account together right? Send current statements, car insurance, credit cards, etc..

And no they wont check DMV to see if the title is current.
