Job Interview : Any opinions ?

I recently appeared for an interview with a very reputed company with worldwide operations. The interview seemed to go well. I was called thrice by the hiring manager and met his boss , the team and the HR personnel who would handle the paperwork and salary requirements etc.

It all seemed to go so well that I hardly had any doubt that I would get an offer. However, I was told after two weeks by the hiring manager that the position is on hold and I should continue with my job search !

I was also told that I could follow up with him in near future should the position open up as he is looking to expand and hire more than one person. What should I make out of all this ? Any opinions ?

They did invite you to follow up, sounds legit. if they said, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out, that would be a different story :)

i would suggest forget abt it and keep looking.......if you get that offer...all you have to do is say yes if you do not come across better opportunity....

they can take months to make a decision.......and sometime they may not hire at all...

Yes, I am still trying to overcome all this. After having been called thrice to interview this is an emotional roller-coaster expecially when the salary is going to nearly double.

I will appreciate your honest input

Braindrain,
I wish you get the job you are aspiring for...

I am a non-IT guy. I know that most of my friends in IT field earn about 100k per year with an average number of 8 years of work experience. I live in Silicon Valley; I do not know where you live. However, I also have friends who make 60k per year and 130k per year in IT.

Assuming you are an "typical" IT guy liveing in Silicon Valley, please clarify if someone is willing to pay you in the range of $160k to 200k. You lucky..what kind of job is that?

I will appreciate you honest inputs.....

Other folks, I solicit your stories in which you were offered twice your salary when you are already making in the range 90k to 100k.

Thanks
SP

I once got an offer from a public-traded company. They filed my H-1B transfer and paid for my family to fly over there to find a place to live, then rescind the offer, The reason they gave was due to the economy downturn, they were instructed by the board of directors to freeze all hirings.

Keep searching. If you are realy interested with that position. Call your contact once in a while just to keep the meory fresh in case something opens up. Thanks.

Hi,

I was in similar situation some time back in my carrier. I was called twice and interviewed by the client and was hopeful to start. Then there was no contact for a while and I lost hope. After couple of months, they called me again and asked me to resume the job the next day! :)

After I joined, I enquired why it took so long and found that they indeed hired another person with TN status (from Canada) to avoid H1 hassel, but did not get the expected results.

If you are destined for that position, it will come back to you eventually. Do not worry about these things and keep your hope alive and looking for other avenues. All the best in your search :D

Thanks

Don't get me wrong, but sounds like you are new to the corporate world. These things happen all the time. It is usually the high level decision, when they don't fill a position(This way). What might have happend is that the company did not do relatively well in the previous quarters. So, they go stingy and don't want to spend too much, worse is cut spending. I think you are better of not joining the company. If they don't have money to hire you, they won't be able to keep you there for long.

My suggestion is, keep looking, and you might get an offer that beats this one. The IT market is hot(esp in California). Unless you are looking for a 175k with $3Mil in stocks :)

People,
Jus to divert you from the troubles of retrogression....

Can we talk about candidly about the hike in salary we get when we change jobs? I have never heard about any one being promised twice the salary when they change jobs, as Braindrain had alluded.

I changed the job three months ago and got a 20% hike in salary. I definitely do not make in the range of 100k-120k.

Does anyone have an experience of getting 100% salary increase, no matter what their current salary is???

I will apprciate you thoughts....We do not need to discuss about the absolute salary. All we need to discuss is about the % increase in salary when we change jobs...come on guys...

Thanks,
Senthil

100% increase is possible, if you were getting nailed by a desi consulting company in Alabama and later move to Silicon Valley for a regular 120k job. That actually makes it more than 100% raise :)

I also questioned the manager as to why the position would be on hold when there is lot of work and the dept is expected to expand.

He then said that they have hired a temp internally for now and that he has my resume and I am on his radar should the position open up, however, I should keep looking.

If they have work and not hiring people, which means the company as a whole may not be doing that well or they just want to grow organically. Whatever the reasons might be, if the manager asked you to look further, you should take heed and start your search sooner than later. I can certainly say that you'll find similar or better opportunity soon.

Remember one thing though, this company was not going out of their way or doing you any favor to pay you, what you think is a high salary. They offered you that salary, because you are worth that much in the market these days. Base Salaray don't vary that much between companies in the same geographical location.

Good luck with your search.

If you are newbie to the corporate world. Some tips
(1) Never think u r indespensable
(2) Look for yourself
(3) Do not believe anyone
(4) If someone is beating around the bush giving diplomatic answers- nail them. It is a bad practice companies follow, they do not want to be straightforward. This is common everywhere.
(5) Be very careful in the words you choose
(6) If you want h1b sponsership and eventually Green card - you must choose ur company very carefully.

Yes . I appreciate the points you made and agree. I am not new to the corporate world but just that I am looking to switch now due to retrogression. As a result not very well aware of these diplomatic talks.

I was hopeful only because the job description was much the same and it provided me a good opportunity. Moreover there are people in my family working for the same company.

The importance of choosing the company is a very relevant in this post retrogression period , however, when I was looking for a job around the last quarter of 2001, the economy was at its worst in 20 years. Imagine getting sponsored (H-1 ) and having a choice at that time !!!

Those days are gone now. There was some honesty and some progressive attitude during 2001 and companies did sponser h1b .. etcc.. but now I see a big difference. Everyone tend to be diplomatic and play carefully. The cause could be fear of losing jobs due to outsourcing. Sometimes it is sick that we have to it ourselves and face it everyday in the morning when we go to office to see false faces.
On the contrary, there are progressive companies who have progressive leaders and would see you as valuble resource. Identifying those companies maybe the key.

The company I interviewed for is a top notch company. May be the reason that I was given was genuine. I hope for the best.

Somethings in life we learn the hard way through experience hence the wisdom of proverbs and advice of elders should be carefully considered.

I guess you should just continue looking and follow up at regular intervals with this company as well just to be on the radar.

In 2002 I had interview for a well kknow company, had 7 interviews the same day and an offer at the end of the day. They however had to go through 6 or more levels of approval and my thing got stuck in between. I followed up for a year every month and came to reliaze through another insider that there was a hiring freeze and all that. Over a period of time priorities could change.

Sometimes (or rather many times) there could be disconnect between the department and HR, the department wants to hire but HR and management is slow. This is what I am encountering in my current workplace. The group wanted people desperately, hired 2 but the management process took such a long time 2-3 months, that one guy got fed up and joined another company.

Bottomline, keep looking but keep checking with the other one too, you never know. If you can find out more info from insiders, try to do that too.

Good luck!

Thanks for your response Avi. Yes its always good to be hopeful.

I would also like to network with anyone who is working into financial services industry.
