J2 and Medicaid eligibility

A friend of ours who is on J2 and pregnant was denied emergency medicaid because of the J2 status. Does it make sense -even illegal immigrants are eligibale for emergency medicaid?

Most J-1 sponsors should offer (or require) health insurance. The J=1 should have purchased it for himself and all family members.

Medicaid eligibility varies by state. Medicaid is for low income individuals. Many people on J-1 have salaries and resources above the qualifying income and resources.

Normal pre-natal care is not emergency - only delivery. They need to make payment arrangements.

(Hint - if they had enough money to sponsor a visitor, they do have resources to pay for delivery.)
