J1 waiver issue

Hi,

I am currently on J1 research and I got my waiver. My visa is expired on 09/20/2005 but my present DS2019 form is valid till 09/14/2006 (got an extension). This is my new DS2019 form, which I got stamped by US immigration officer when I returned from Canada (after attending a conference in Canada). I got a new job offering from another instituition for a J1 research position. Will the waiver that I have be valid even for the new position. The new field is also similar to my present field of expertise. Again I will be applying for my J1 clinical in March as I might start my residency in June 2006. I am interested to know whether it is possible to change to the new position without affecting the waiver that I have now and whether I can change to J1 clinical without any problem. I am chaning to my new position because of unhealthy situation in my present job. Also I not funded in either of the postions by any agency. I would truly appreciate your advise in this regard.

In my opinion waiver is valid since the field is the same.
The new field is also similar to my present field of expertise.

As I mentioned above, you will be okay as long as you work in a related field..but I am not sure about ur second question (changing to clinical).

Thank you very much for the reply. I am a physician and I would be joining my clinical residency (in Surgery) from June 2006. Since I am changing my jobs (on J1 research visa) should I have to get a new waiver to apply for ECFMG (educational commission for foreign medical graduates) sponsored J1 clinical visa? Thanks.

I infer from your reply that I need not apply for new waiver to change to J1 clinical from J1 research. How would I know if US government agency (DOS or USCIS) considers the field of my work the same. Which agency should I contact for this specified information. Should I have to file an advisory opinion again. Thanks.

What I meant was from One research position to another. I do not know much about J1 research to J1 clinical. May be someone else in this forum can give some suggestions.
Good luck.

As far as I know if you renew your J after getting a waiver then you need a new waiver, thats because you are agreeing to the same terms again. J1 clinical is a totally different animal and I wouldn't even go there. Much more difficult to get a waiver on that and I am pretty sure they will make you subject to the 2yr HRR.
