J1 visa stamp duration

With regards to ECFMG sponsored physicians:

Does anyone know (for sure) whether the start and end dates on the DS-2019 are also reflected on the J1 visa stamp? In other words, if, for a 3 year residency, the start and end date are for the entire 3 years on the DS-2019, will the J1 visa stamp also be for the same duration, or, on the contrary, will it always be for no more than a 1 year duration, regardless of what the DS-2019 says?

i know (for sure) that the start and end dates on the DS-2019 are on the DS-2019 and the start and end dates on the visa are on the visa. they are not necessarily the same, really depending on which country you are from...
