J1 to H1 transfer

I am currently on H-1B which is valid till 8/8/2013. But I am laid off as from this employment as on 7/29/2011. So I need to change to another employer (which sponsors H-1B). But they can't start me until 9/1/2011. This will keep me out of status for a month. So, meanwhile, I plan to work on a temporary research position in a University as J-1. This research employment will last for a month. After that I will work with the new employer on H-1B. My question is: is it possible/easy to transfer J-1 into H-1 or are there any complications/risks involved?

Hi Madhur1983,

Before the exchange visitor can change her status to other non-immigrant visa categories OR get a US Green Card, he/she should first leave the US and return home for a period of two years.

Why do you think a university would go through the effort and costs for a J1 for one month? Have you advised them that you plan to take advantage of them. Go for a vacation; convert to a B2; don't be dishonest with the university.
