J1 approval after the fact

Hi, I was wondering if anyone of you might be able to answer some questions for me. What happens if you get a residency in the Match, and are sponsored for a J1 visa. You go to the Embassy in your home country, and they say they need to do their security checks before they decide whether to approve it or not. Time passes, and you are late for your residency, so they tell you you've lost your spot cos they can't wait any longer. A few weeks down the line, your approval comes through, now what? Since you've lost your residency spot, you now don't have the initial sponsor for the visa anymore. Can you ask around for an open residency spot elsewhere at this juncture? If there is a spot open, how does that affect your visa approved for your initial program? Is all hope for this academic year lost at this point or are there other options? Please help...

All you need is to have new IAP-66 from ECFMG to keep your visa valid. This can be arranged through the new residency program (if you find one).
