Issues around EAD

Hello, everybody,

I managed to get appointment in Tampa for tomorrow, almost impossible thing to do. Well, it's been 3 months [on July 6], since I supplied my whole I-130/I-485/I-765 package, to MSC.
1. Will they issue my interim EAD right there in TPA office or will they mail it?
Do I need extra pictures?
2. Is EAD it valid as a government-issued document, let's say for flying by planes etc.?
3. Also, as for the FL-DL. Anyone has any experience, how long it takes to get a DL? Will the first one be paper-based or regular? Same question for ID cards?
4. As for SSN, since I'm obviously in the need for work, I heard it takes about 2 weeks after applying to get a physical card by mail. How about if I just need a number, since I can use EAD for work. Can I call someplace?
Thanks,

Kaligurl, Hello! Nice to meet another Tampa’s applicant! :)

1. Will they issue my interim EAD right there in TPA office or will they mail it? Do I need extra pictures?
Right there.

2. Is EAD it valid as a government-issued document, let's say for flying by planes etc.?
Logically – yes, although you’ll be better off everywhere (in the airport, or in a bank, or in a Publix, signing your credit card receipt) with your DL.
Not everybody in America familiar with the EAD documents.

3. Also, as for the FL-DL. Anyone has any experience, how long it takes to get a DL? Will the first one be paper-based or regular? Same question for ID cards?
You’ll get a piece of paper (a.k.a. receipt) at first. It will be valid for one month only. This would be your temporary DL. In 30 days your normal DL will come in a mail from Tallahassee.

4. As for SSN, since I'm obviously in the need for work, I heard it takes about 2 weeks after applying to get a physical card by mail. How about if I just need a number, since I can use EAD for work. Can I call someplace?
Sometimes it takes more then two weeks, but unfortunately SS office is the only place to apply for it. There is no any other place “to call”. The good news – once you apply for your SS# you’ll get a receipt with your printed number on it. You can show it to your employer to start working even before the actual card arrives.

Good luck!

Hi,

how long one can use Interim EAD?
And is it ok to use iEAD for DL and SSN?

THAnks.

Thanks a lot, Jane! I went there today, spent like 1.5 hour [I read a book, best idea ever] and finally, all they said was - Here's your appointment for Wednesday. So hopefully. I really can't wait. My international DL expired a month ago, I need some ID for traveling to DC to get a new passport, before I get my SSN and DL, since my school starts in August and perhaps work too. And, nevertheless, I need to work. Feels like neverending. How's your case going?
Eggk, I thought about the same thing. I just hope interim works fine everywhere, I really don't want to wait any longer...

When I got my temporary EAD it was good for a month. It looked a bit crappier than the regular EAD card, but should have the same value!

Can’t you FedEx your old passport to your Embassy for renewal? Call them and ask.

May case  ? Let me summarize: I have been here for almost 12 years already. My first I-485 is pending in Nebraska SC since 2001 and I just filed another one (marriage-based to USC) in January 2005 with MSC. I have 6 EAD’s in my possession already :o . I did my FP in February 2005 and now waiting for the interview from Tampa DO (another 1 1/2 to 2 years). I know all about never-ending…. ;)

Good luck to you!
:)

Hello, Jane. Good luck. I've been here 5 years. Most of them without any papers and trying to get by. Found work places that weren't too strict about checking. Finally got married in February 2005. Where are you from? I'm from Slovakia. My brother lives in NYC, haven't seen his since xmas, planning to join DC visit and NY trip. My embassy changed all the rules when they started giving out EU passports. Before, you could just send it all in...

Hello!
I lived here illegally for almost 5 years here as well then got approved for derivative asylum and things went easier. My country borders yours, so call me neighbor :D . My embassy won’t even renew my passport unless I present them with the Green Card, I used INS Travel Passport to go overseas and back.
You can send me PM if you have any questions not related to this message board.
