issue with reentry

Hi,
My employer asked me to go on an international assignment for 1 year (still paid in US dollars as my salary). We decided to apply for re-entry permit for my wife since she didnot want to travel back and forth to the US every few months. We decided not to apply for my re-entry permit; since I would be making brief 1 week trips every 3-4 months.
So, we applied for re-entry permit a month back; but now my employer is cancelling the international assignment. So, we are not going abroad at all.
What should my wife do?
Her re-entry permit has not arrived; and we are still in the US.
Should we cancel it?
Should we leave it as it is?
We have had our green-card for over a year now.

Please give us guidance

issue with re-entry

Well, I understand that I don't "have" to do anything. However, there got to be someway to notify INS about my intentions to not need (or use if they have already issued one) the re-entry permit.
The reason I am keen about this is say in the future we really need a re-entry permit. The fact that my wife has applied once, might work against her for future re-entry permits - won't it?

Experts, please advise

JoeF - thanks, however...

Joef,
Thanks for the post. It is very reassuring. However, I still feel that I want to somehow not be stuck with the 're-entry permit' now even if I donot need to not do anything.
The reason is that I donot trust INS to be rational in the future when we would need them to be rational.
Is there anyway of 'cancelling' the re-entry permit? OR atleast a way to notify the INS that I am not using it, etc...?
