Issue with Police Clearance Certificates - please help

Hi,

For a family based GC being sponsored for me by my husband, a USC, I am being asked to produce police clearance certificates from both district police station and local passport office. I am in the process of securing it from district police station now, but my local passport office is Chennai and I live outside chennai. My interview date is Jan-11-2008. Sources from the district police station say that it takes a minimum of 2 months for the chennai passport office to issue police clearance certificate, and that I have to surrender my passport to them for the same. This means I will not have my passport during my interview nor the police clearance certificate from the local passport office. I find myself in a very problematic situation. Please help me out. Is there any way by which I can get the clearance certificate from chennai passport office in a week?

If my passport is stuck with the chennai passport office, I will not have my passport for any other procedure like medical exam, interview, etc.

Please help me. I am in a jam.

Can you explain to the local passport office that you can't surrender your passport because of your interview, and if it suffices if they see the passport and make a copy?
