Hi folks,
I would love to get some advise on what to do with my situation.
I'm a Green Card Holder, came to the US in 1991 on an F-1 Visa.
My Birth Certificate from India states my name as JAKOB GOPINADHAN, the first name being the name of my grandfather, but everything i have is under the name i've always used, Gautam V Gopinath.
I recently applied for my Citizenship and had my interview on Friday, February 1st.
The officer questioned why my birth certificate name was different, I explained that its what my parents had put on there at time of birth, but i've always used Gautam Gopinath. I also explained its the EXACT same birth certificate i used for my F1 as well as for my Green Card, and there wasn't an issue since what's on the Passport is what is recognized as my legal name.
He gave me a N-652, Naturalization Interview results notice and requested a 'court order showing a name change from what's on the birth certificate to what's on my passport'.
I've done some research, it seems that i can approach the Indian Consulate in The US to have a name Changed ON MY PASSPORT, not on my birth certificate. In more research, I found that i need to contact a 'First Magistrate' in India who can issue me a Name change document.
My questions are:
1. Has anyone gone through something similar?
2. How do i go about getting a name change document from a 'First Magistrate' in India?
Thanks in advance!
