Is There Any Way?

Is there any way to find out online, when N-400 file has been sent to the local/district office from the Service Center, for interview? I read in a previous post that if somebody does not see the case status information of N-400 online, that means that the file has been sent to the local office for scheduling interview. Is it correct? If it is correct, does that mean that we cannot see the movement (status) of N-400 online after it has been sent to local office?? In that case what is the message that shows up online, if we check the status online after the file has moved to local office??

Before sending the file to local office for interview, does the Service Center finish ALL the necessary works, such as fingerprint, background check, name check, any other checking, etc.?? What does the local/district office do regarding N-400, other than conducting interviews and oath ceremonies?? Does the interview notice come from the local office or the Service Center? Thanks to anybody who can share their experience on these questions.

Generally, the case status disappears online when files moves from Service Center to local office. Not always but mostly. Interviews are scheduled by local office only. Fingerprints/Name Checks requests are initiated by SVC Center automatically when a file is created for you. In some cases (like mine) the name check gets delayed by a long time. FP's are usually very quick. The DO also checks to see if you qualify for Natz (checking your previous INS records etc). Nothing else.

I believe after the introduction of a new online tracking system back in April, case status for N400 doesn't disappear anymore... Mine didn't and I know quite a few of people in the same situation as well...

Questions to Rahul Kumar: What do “SVC” and “DO” means in your posting? If name check process makes the delay, is that delay before the interview or before the oath? Is there anyway to find out if the name check is causing the delay? Is there any way to find out if FP and name check has been cleared? Thanks for the response.

Questions to n400la: If the case status info does not disappear throughout the entire process, does it tell you that your file has been moved to local office for interview? Or if someone passes the interview does the message show that you have passed the interview and waiting for oath, or your N-400 has been approved for oath ceremony and so on?? Thanks for the response.

My case status never changed through the entire process - once it appeared in Nov 2003, it stayed the same. Last update time is still Nov 2003 even though since then I did FP and interview... I'm still checking my status online in hope to see whether something is happening with my case but so far no luck.

SVC = Service Center (Vermont,California,Texas,Nebraska)
DO = District Office (Your local office)
FP Status = Refer previous posts and my recent post in another thread. Turn around time is very quick
Name Check = Initiated when they receive your FP (my knowledgeable guess!) or when they create a file for you. It is always inititated before interview, sometimes it just takes that long. Refer name check thread to find status

Thanks to Rahul Kumar and n400la

Has any of you checked the N-400 status online recently? I filed at Texas Service Center in January 2004. The message shows "it is taking about 990 days to process N-400". What does it mean? Does it mean TSC takes about 3 years to process the N-400 before sending it to DO for interview, or does it mean it takes 3 years to complete the whole process (upto oath)? My DO is New Orleans, and I know couple of people who have completed the whole process (upto oath) in about 13/14 months in New Orleans DO recently. Any thoughts on this issue? Thanks.

Welcome to the world of USCIS aka BCIS aks INS! My online status shows that it takes 30-60 days to process N400. I have been waiting 11 months.

Moral: Ignore any predictions unless you see food on the table!

Rahul Kumar or n400la or anybody

I do not understand one thing!! Yes, only one thing, ha ha ha!! When we check Service Center processing times, their charts do not include N-400 processing times, but when we do website online status check it shows --- “It is taking between so and so days to process N-400 applications”. My question is then which office puts this info in the online status check, is it the Service Center or District office?? If this is put by the Service Center then why don’t they show up in their monthly processing dates update? I have not seen N-400 processing date information in any of the 4 Service Centers’ monthly update in the CIS website. Any thought will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Akarim,

you can pretty much ignore the line "it is taking between so and so days..." The web site priority dates are located under District Office. And DOs are responsible for updating n400 processing times. Check your district office processing dates...

tell me this rahul...how long it took ur file from Philly to vermont???

My file was ALWAYS in the VSC. Never ever came to Philly DO. But IMO it should not take too long for files to move. I cant give you a time frame as I don't know..

Online Tracking system

The BCIS online tracking system does not accurately reflect any status changes. I don't believe the system is updated to reflect any transfer, I recieved my interview letter about three weeks ago, and the status has not changed. I also do not expect it to change until the interview and oath is completed.

I think it will work in the future when everything settles down, right now, there's just too many changes in the department that this is perhaps just not feasible. Even the proccessing times are just a guesstimate, and not very accurate, I used it more of a guideline, give it at least three weeks or a month behind!

Soul fh,
I totally agree with you, and probably most of us in this forum believe that too that on line "status check" is another scam form USCIS to deprive applicants to get the up to date information about their cases. For instance I called this morning to get the info about my N-400 app., the person on the ohter hand told me that NYC is currently processing May 19 2003. Then I told her how come in May NYC was processing Nov 16th 2003? She couldn't answer me. I recently visited 26 Federal Plaza, NYC. The lady in DO office was quite helpful and told me that my file was placed in que on 8/27/03 to be sent to NYC DO from VSC. She also showed me the hard copy, but couldn't give that to me ( by law she was not allowed to give that to me ). She also told me to call 800 # to inquire why my file was sitting there since 8/27/03
USCIS doesn't want to listen anything at this point since NYC is currently processing May 19 2003. Does anyone know how can I expedite to move my file from VSC to NYC DO?

Thanks
Choyty

It appears that the online status time frame is the worst case scenario. I filed with TSC in September 2003, and my initial online status said 60 - 90 days. It changed to 750 - 999 days after a month. I became a U.S Citizen in July 2004, and it took me exactly 10 months from filing date to Oath. I checked the status of my N-400 online today, it still says it is being processed... :D

Hello Fitness99

What was your District Office, if you don't mind. Mine is in New Orleans. I filed in January 2004. Did my fingerprint in March 1st week 2004. Waiting for the interview letter, and my wife is waiting for my citizenship done so that she can come here. We are living separated now for about 3 years. It is a torture for both of us. Yes I visited her several times during last 3 years but it is not the same as living together permanently and my professional life is also suffering a lot for this long wait. So every day wait is very torturous and long wait for me, as it is for many others, I think. I think most DOs in Texas are completing the whole process very fast. What is your opinion? Thanks.

I applied to TSC with PD: 5/8/03 and FP: 6/13/03. At the time, my NOA said the 365 days processing time, but the online status has been showing 750 to 999 days to process. BTW, my DO is Orlando, FL, which shows the current processing dates on 1/24/03, and it gets updated sporadically. So I don't really put too much confidence in these projected timelines. My attorney says that some DO's have higher volume of applicants, lower staff member in general or assigned to the N-400 cases, and then from time to time some of the DO's move around the staff to concentrate to diefferent types of cases than N-400. So all of these dates are just a crab shoot.

Waiting to see my online status.

Would anyone be able to tell me how long it typically takes before you can see the status of your case online?

My PD is April 5th, 2004 and I still can not see my case online.

I know the online dates are notoriously incorrect, but I would like to see some evidence that they are working on my case.

Should I call the 800#? Or should I try and call VSC?

Any help would be gladly appreciated.
