Hi ,
My passport is expiring in next month.
I applied for a new passport. The question is I have the visa until june 2003 and it is stamped in old passport.
Whether I have to get my new passport also be stamped with visa.
Is it ok if I carry both passports and present those whenever required.
When I get the new passport I think it will be having a new passport number.whether I have to update this number with any agency(INS) or State Dept.
Presently my I-140 is under processing and expecting the approval in a month. When I apply for 485 do I need to get the new passport stamped with visa.(though my old passport has the same).
Thanks in advance and any help is greatly appreciated.

You do not mention which country\'s passport you carry. But in any case, passport renewal has no effect on the visa you carry. You have two choices:
(1) Send both your passports to all the embassies or the US Department of State to get them transferred from old to new. There is no form that I am aware of that you have to fill. Call to find out.
(2) Carry both your passports while travelling.

Before you make any choice make sure that in your new passport you have some indication of the sort "This passport has been issued to extend the validity of passport #xxxxxx. This does not cancel any visas that have been issued on the previous passport"

hi rk,
Thanks for the reply.I belong to India and I wonder whether I have to send the new passport to St Loius State dept for stamping of visa.
I do not think the Indian embassy which will issue new passport will be writing information on new passport which will link the both(old and new) passports.

Thanks again,
Anu

Fortunately "Yes", the Indian embassy does write adequate information to link the old to the new. I am an Indian passport holder and have the experience, as I hold all my passports together.
