My kid's card is ordered but passport is not stamped as no approval notice was mailed/received.

1. Is passport stamping still needed?
2. Does the card override the passport stamping?

TIA.

1) For adults, yes. Then only BCIS can order your cards. For kids, usually, they have the welcome notice and their formalities are different.

2) Yes. The card's validity is 10 years. The passport stamping is valid for only one year. That doesn't mean you are immediately out of status after one year. As far as the BCIS is concerned, you're still a permenant resident. Until you get your card, the passport stamping is the only way of getting into the USA.

INFO: For adults, if one does not have a passport with him during stamping or has an expired passport they will give him a temporary stamped card with his picture on it.

Yes
