Is Passport required during 485

Can annybody tell me at what stage during 485 ( stamping or FP ) you need the passport.
The reason I am asking is, I am planning to get my current H1 Visa
revalidated from St. Louis.
And also does it matter if your visa is expired but you are in status
because my I-94 expires in 2003 and so does my H1.

my case

my h1b visa expired in september 2001
before expiry my attorney filed for extension of H1 which was granted
upto september 2003. also the extension H1 has a new I-94 at the bottom with the new expiry date.

and i filed 485 in July 2001

but my passport is stamped with September 2001
My attorney said that as long as i do not leave the country i do not have to stamp the extension on the passport nor is it necessary for me to send it to St Louis for revalidation

This was prior to filing I-485
but now it does not matter because if I-94 expires after I-485 application it does not matter.

Bottom line - You do not have to send your passport to St. Louis for stamping if you have filed I-485 and have been maintaining your valid status in the country.

You do need your passport when you get approval
They stamp I-551 on your passport when you get approval

yes u dont need passport during fingerprinting

however my suggestion is that u dont need to send passport to St. Louis for stamping at all

You are in adjustment status and it is important to extend the H1
and have the extension paper in your hand but not important at all
to stamp the extension on your passport.
 
Which I-94 do you give to Ailine...

WHen you are going out of the country:

1. The one which you got when you entered last.
 But this has expired long back (It was stamped
 only till my visa my valid).
2. The I-94 that you get with your H1B extension.
 This is valid till a later date.

Please note that I\'m planning to enter the country
on AP. So, I guess I won\'t need I-94 so I can surrender
both 1 and 2 to the airline.

Please share your experience.

Surrender both the I-94

I surrendered both I-94, which were stapled in my passport. I got the suggestion to surrender both I-94 form my lawyer before travelling outside the country.
