Is OPT valid after H1 approval

Hi
My OPT expires in July 2007. To avoid out of status period I applied for H1 this year through a consultancy and it got approved with oct 1st start date. I want to transfer the H1 to another employer. can I work for the new employer on OPT till H1 gets transferred?
How does requesting or not requesting change of status(COS) while applying for h1 affect this situation?
 
on OPT you must be having a EAD......to work you need EAD......so till Oct 1st you can work using your EAD..
