If I changed to a very similar job do I need my new employers support in order to change jobs under AC21?

The new employer is willing to provide a employment verification letter. But would the new employer be required to do anything else?
Depends on kind of RFE
God Forbid If you get an RFE on Employer's ability to pay. You may need your employer to give all the Tax and financial detail to USCIS. This may be to prove the employer's Credentials for his ability to give you a long term / permanant Position.

Pls chk link below. It mentions exactly documents needed if you want to change job using AC21. The EVL is of one of those documents.

If you are past the I140 stage, you do not have to worry about that. All you need is an EVL, an explanation letter with some good law language, some paystubs etc etc....
