Is it safe to call USCIS Customer Service and ask for the I-140 receipt

My company HR is reluctant in giving out the I-140 receipt number. I would think there might be many with similar situation. So I would request some advice.
Is it advisable to ask the Customer Service for I-140 receipt number ?
Would asking bring up any adverse affect such as RFE being issued or further delaying of the case as specific enquiry might have caused a few security bells to ring.
Please advice, if someone has done a similar thing or heard any experiences.
Thanks.

Its not a problem. You can go ahead and try your luck out.

Because, they would not give you the number.

To elaborate, the 140 belongs to your employer and not you - the USCIS representative will likely not discuss anything regarding the 140 at all with you...

You are saying its not a problem, then why do you mention about 'LUCK'. ?

Its not a problem since its not going to generate a RFE, "LUCK" means to say if the officer/operator who talks to you, had a good night last night to give you the number.

Not to discourage you, but its highly impossible to get you that number. 140 petition belongs to your employer and you will not get that info other than from your employer or your attorney. I tried for my 485 receipt number where I am the applicant and beneficiary and they refuesd. Only other way, is submit FOIA and you will get it in couple of months.

Completely right, you will not be able to get your I-140 receipt number because the petitioner is your employer and you are a beneficiary. The same is happening with my case. However, I called and asked for my I-485 receipt to be sent to me and I recieved it in less than 10 days. I am the applicant there, so they cannot refuse sending the receipt.
Now about it worsening things and fear of REF being sent... I also had my doubts about calling, but after talking with custumer service, it seems that doesn't have too much of a serious role. They cannot tell you any specific inforamtion, they cannot tell you what is happening with your case. All they can do is issue a request to send more information (or receipt number) about your case. I asked openly and specifically if my request has any effect on my case, if there are any negative concequences. The representative said clearly: no. This is just what I went through. I hope this helps.

Cannot obtain the receipt number

wouldliketoknow , Kishore_I,
You guys are very right. I called up today, and the service representive echoed the same thing that you guys have just pointed out. So yes, it is impossible to get the I-140 receipt number.
