Is it possible to renew the AP travel document after its expiry date?

I mistook the 'Paroled Until' date in AP travel document for Travel-until date and upon arrival to USA from abroad, immigration officers sent me for Deferred inspection as the AP had expired by then. They wanted me to get the new AP after 2 months (they a least want me to produce the AP renewal receipt). Can I apply for new AP even after it has expired, based on pending i485?

It's not so much a "renewal" as applying for AP again, which you can do at any time as an I-485 applicant.
