Is it possible to commence employment based on the I551 stamp and not the SSN ?

My wife and I have applied for our SS cards and we were told that it would take around 4 weeks to get the cards. (Since INS may not have entered the A #'s in their system)

My wife did not previously have a SSN and she has to take up a job in a couple of days. We haven't spoken to the company as yet about her SSN but is it possible for the company to issue an employment with the understanding that she would be getting her SSN within a couple of weeks?

Technically, is it possible to commence employment based on the I551 stamp in the passport?

Any information will be appreciated.

Thanks!

The law requires the card to be shown, but even big companies accept the number filled on a form, when evidence of PR is provided. She could ring the SS department and see if they can give the number over the phone. Then she can show her I-551 stamp to employers and and give the number for salary. However, it is very unlikely that an employer will put her on the pay roll without the SS number.
