Is filing AR-11 necessary?

I just moved to a new address. My parents continue to live at my old address.

Do I HAVE to file AR-11 and notify INS of my address change?

Is it possible to file AR-11 only to let INS know that my place of residence has changed, but that I would like to continue receiving mail at my old address?

If you want to get your mails to the new address you have to file AR 11.

Other wise just keep the same, nothing to inform. If you moved different city it is necessary to inform. Otherwise just keep your old address.

If you update your address you will get all the correspondence to your new address which you don't want. Right ?

Well, the following is just my opinion:

The law requires all immigrants and applicants to inform the USCIS with address and job changes within 10 days of the change. Prior to 9/11 this law was not really enforced. Now they say it is. Not reporting the change using the AR-11, I believe, is a misdemeanor, and the applicant could be considered deportable.

The AR-11 form does not go to the office handling your case. It goes to a different address. This is why on the USCIS web site they encourage you to also send the address change to the office handling your case as well.

This means that if you only send the AR-11, you have satisfied the requirements of the law, but the office handling your case would still have your old address, and doesnot know anything about the AR-11.

Bottom line before you decide not to send the AR-11 please go to the USCIS web site and research the issue a little. This is much safer.

Good luck

You are required by law to file AR-11. However, mail concerning your applications will probably continue to go to your old address if you do not call the NCSC to update their records.
