If this is the first EAD, I believe yes. However, many companies want to see and make a copy of the actual card before they can put you in their payrol.
If this is a renewal, nowadays the answer is 'yes'. In the past (legacy INS), the new date used to be the expiry date of the old EAD, to ensure non-disruption in the employment.
Nowadays, you may lose days/months from your current EAD, or you may have a gap in your employment. It all depends on when your EAD is approved.
General advice: apply a renewal 3-4 months before your current EAD expires. The idea is, if you still haven't got your new EAD after 90 days, you will still have time to get an iEAD from a local CIS and hopefully there will be no gap in your employment.
