From what I know:
If say your medicals expire in a week-then they have the discretion to allow you a grace period of days - DEPENDING upon our medicals. They have a rating system from to 1 to 9. If a person is anything other than a 1, he/she will not be allowed that grace period. Most healthy people however are a '1'.
Needless to say, please get a second opinion as well.
