Interview

Hi,

My wife finished her interview at Buffalo, NY successfully. Interview appointment was 1:40pm. We reached promptly 5 min before the time. It was 1:40pm by the time security check was completed and entered the room (waiting). We put the appointment letter in the tray. There were around 10 people. She was called for interview at 2:00pm.

My wife had a trip more than six months and less than 12 months. Couple of traffic tickets - both for speeding five to 15 mph more than speed limit. We have paid the fine. We had taken transcripts from IRS. We had chosen not to put any traffic ticket details in the application. Also, in the trips section with dates, we had put trips only in the past five years. She had a weeklong trip to Europe before 5 years, but, after becoming lawful permanent resident. She had practiced the questions for only two hours on previous day, and 15 minutes in the car while driving to district office.

The interview was recorded in a video tape. In the interview, after oath, he made her read a sentence, and write a sentence. Then she was asked 10 questions. She missed one question about term of House of Representatives, she said six years instead of two years.

He never bothered about traffic tickets. When mentioned about Europe trip, he said that they care only about trips in past five years. My wife tried to give the dates, so that he could update her application, but, he again said it is not necessary. He never bothered to check IRS transcripts. But, he did ask questions about the trip which was longer than six months. He confirmed that I was still working in US, having a residence, and looked at copy of tax return submitted with application. Regarding oath date he said there is one in June, and she would receive her oath letter soon. He gave her a letter saying 'Congratulations....'

Officer was very nice, polite, and professional.

For those looking for dates,
Priority Date - Oct 2003
Interview - Apr 2004

Good luck to everybody.

Man I really should have applied somewhere other than NYC!!

7 Months to Interview is great - congrats!!

Please let us know when your wife receives her oath letter and what the date is...

What kind of questions did he ask about the trip longer than six months? I have one of those too...

Thanks!

Are you sure? This is because in the N-400 form you are supposed to list all trips since becoming LPR, not within the past 5 years.

The interviewer may have a misunderstanding with this as well. But if he/she's OK with this, that's fine.

btw, did the interview ask you for your passports to verify the trip dates?

I am sure. My wife asked him twice and he said no both times. It is nice that it is recorded, so, this way anyone can know that we did not miss this intentionally. I expected the officer to at the least update the application form. But, he did not do that either. I think he is just another example of how different officers interpret and enforce rules differently.

No.

Hi Rahul,

Don't you wish you had stayed in Buffalo? ;)

Btw, you are helping lots of people with your suggestions. Don't get bogged down by people who are not mature. Keep up the good work. I wanted to say this to JoeF too, I hope he sees this posting.

Good luck with yours.

Sure

My wife felt that he went into detail about the trip. He took a separate paper and had few questions. She did not remember all the questions. But, questions were to find out/ensure were, whether
1. Taxes were filed - we had promptly filed
2. Any residence in US - We still owned a house, and I was still in US working
3. Whether she worked during the time she was away - she did not work

I think the questions were to evaluate intentions of abandonment of residence here. Good luck to you.

The thing is you will need to put down ALL trips (including the European trip) to the application in the first place.

So, what makes you feel comfortable putting down trips for the last 5 years only? I am asking this not to upset you but because, if the interviewer is picky or troublesome, he/she could question your honesty while you have put down incomplete information and sign the form. This is because the N-400 asks you to list all trips since becoming LPR.

It was not a comfort thing. I wish I had put it before, but, it was a mistake; I had thought that part was in line with previous two questions which refer to previous five years. It was not intentional, and that was the reason she herself mentioned it in the interview.

I had realized this mistake while browsing a thread, that it is since LPR, and not 5 years.
