So finally after a long wait - I had my interview at the Fairfax VA DO. The appointment was at 8:40 am. I reached there at about 8:10.
After about an hour's wait - I was called for the interview at about 9:10. The IO was a very courteous gentleman. After swearing me in to tell the truth, he went over all the paperwork and the N-400. Since I had known that both sets of my FPs were unreadable - I had obtained the local police clearance ahead of the interview. The IO said that it was good I did that and that it made life simpler for him and me.
After going over the paperwork, he asked me to read a sentence and write. Then the Q&A exam - got first six correct and we stopped there.
After signing a couple of pieces of paper per the procedure, he congratulated and said I was approved and gave me an appointment for 2 pm ceremony (reporting time 1 pm).
As I was getting back on the road, he called me and asked me to come back since there was additional piece of paper 9a sworn statement) I had to sign in lieu of the fingerprints. Did that and was finally home at about 11 am.
Came back with family just before 1 pm. The applicants were made to stand in two lines separated on the basis of last 3 digits of A#. One by one, they verified the details on the natz. cert. and made sure photographs were our own
. Along with verification, they handed us a packet with seat numbers on it. The packet contained a copy of oath, the pledge of allegiance, copy of the constitution and the declaration of independence and a small American flag. We were then escorted to the second floor and asked to take seats per seat numbers provided.
The ceremony started at 2 pm. The guest was a judge from the immigration court. He administered the oath and made brief remarks. Then there was the pledge recital.
Then they began handing out the certificates. They told everyone that they would take as much time as needed for everyone to take pictures with family etc. The USCIS station director functioned as photographer for those who didn't have anybody to take pictures or those who wanted to take pictures with the family. I that that was very courteous of her to do so.
We were out of there just before 3 pm.
Now waiting for OL for my wife - she has had her interview in August - but since she is changing her name, hasn't gotten the letter yet.
