I had my interview on the 21st of June. Interview was at 8.30 am. Went in half an hour early. Showed the interview letter to the guards, cleared their security check, went in and was told to place the interview letter in the window and wait for my name to be called out. I had gone to the interview with my wife who is a citizen. I had applied for naturalization based on 3 yrs marriage to a U.S citizen.
After a wait of about half an hour i was called in for the interview. I asked the interviewing officer who was a lady if she wanted to talk to my wife. She said no the interview is for you and i shall be asking you questions and you will be giving the answers, if there is a need, then i shall talk to your wife. She directed me to her office, introduced herself and then asked me to raise my right hand asking me to repeat the usual stuff after her. She asked me to sit down and wondered why she could not find my birth certificate amongst my paperwork. I told her that when i was born there were no birth certificates. In lieu of birth certificate my matriculation school leaving certificate which has my date of birth works and i have always used it to show my date of birth. She was satisified with the answer.
She then went over the n400 form with me. She would start the address and i would finish it. She would start the phone numbers and would wait for me to finish them. My mailing address is different from my residential address and she asked me why i wanted it that way. I gave her my reason.
She then asked me why i had never gone home in the last three years. My answer was never had the money. She then asked me why when i first came here i did not work for the first four months. I said i went everywhere but no one would give me a job easily. The first job i got, they called back home to verify i was who i said i was. She laughed at that. Then she asked me coming as i did from a country with conservative values, why i was married to an american. I said life is stranger than fiction. I had a broken leg from a biking accident could do nothing than lay in bed, my father got me a computer to pass my time, we met online she came to see me after an year. Came back again and that is when we married. She then said i see people from India are very clever. I said yes we mass produce doctors and engineers, people like me are exceptions for i am neither but come from a family teeming with both. Hence i am the black sheep of the family. She laughed and said yes, i have parents coming in saying i have four sons all doctors, or i have two daughters both engineers and here i am she said pleading with my children to study all the time and they just brush me off.
She then said that she was approving my application for citizenship as she found me transparent but i would have to pass my civics and english test.
She asked me six questions which were:
1) Who are the two senators from your state.
2) Who is the chief justice of the supreme court.
3) When is the president inaugurated.
4) Who meets in the capitol.
5) What is the legislative arm of the govt.
6) What does Declaration of Independence state.
The sentence to be written in english was:
"She has the ability to speak english clearly."
After that she congratulated me for passing the interview and said if i wanted to know when my oath ceremony would be i would have to wait for half an hour if i wanted to do so (which i of course did). The wait was for three and a half hours, which, i did not mind. After all the stress, i am sure we all have been through with the INS (which has gone on from being the INS to BCIS to USCIS to whatever name they choose for themselves in the future).
This site has been very helpful to me, for which i thank everyone posting on this site. Of course the whole experience has left me with a lot of frayed nerves and sleepless nights.
The interview was in W.P.B, Fl.
