Interview AND notification of card printing

I am helping my son-in-law file for a family-based green card (my daughter is a citizen). On May 13 they received a "Request for applicant to appear for initial interview", which referenced their I-485. On May 26th I received (via e-mail):

Application Type: I765 , APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION
Current Status: Card production ordered.

I thought the interview had to be passed first. What am i missing??

The I-765 is the employment authorization card, which is different from the green card, no interview is needed for the employment authorization card. Most people receive their employment card before the interview for the green card. This will allow your son in law to start working before he receives the actual green card.

In addition to what you have already been told, they might also take the card back after the interview or ask you to send it back when he get the green card.the card is just a work authorization for him to work,apply for social security number,open back account, etc.
