Intermin EAD at Newark - Experience & Question

Hi All
I Went for my interim EAD at Newark NJ today. Details of my experience/adventures are:

1. Reached there at 5:55 AM
2. About 50 people in line already + people with Appt
3. 7 AM they start letting people with Appt inside the building
4. 7:30 AM rest of the people were going in 1 by 1
5. My Turn for first discussion with an Imm officer came at 9
6. Checked all the papers and sent me to 13th floor to submit papers
7. Submitted papers at 9:45 AM
8. My name was anounced only at 1:15 PM (wait was killing)
9. Officer askd us for EAD cards (previous) and checked our PP
10. He kept our EAD cards, I thought he'll give it back with the new card
11. Sent me to other room to collect interim EAD
12. my No came after 30 mins for photographs
13. Got my EAD finally at 2;00 but no Old cards
14. EAD card validity from today until 10/23/04 (8 months) - No logic

15. I asked 2 immi officers if they were supposd to hold on to my previous EADs and they said Yes

Need help - Please share your experiences if
a) they issued the inerim EAD for 8 months or any odd dates
b) Kept your previous EADs

My Wife went to Newark office for her IEAD. She also got the IEAD for 8 months. Old EAD was taken by the officers and never returned, which is a routine.
