INS released its annual year end statistical report

November 20, 2002 – The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) released its annual year end statistical report on October 31, 2002. Here is a brief synopsis of the report's findings.

The report noted that receipt of applications and petitions for immigration benefits in September 2002 decreased 13 percent from September 2001. Expectedly, approvals were down 17 percent while denials rose by almost 40 percent during these months. For fiscal year 2002, approvals were down less than 1 percent when compared to fiscal year 2001. The total number of pending applications rose by approximately 6 percent over the course of the year to 4.3 million.

In line with more stringent security efforts at U.S. ports of entry, inspections of U.S. citizens and foreign nationals in September 2002 increased by 9 percent over September 2001. However, total inspections for fiscal year 2002 decreased 13 percent compared to fiscal year 2001.

Total removals for September 2002 were up 5 percent from the previous year, an increase of approximately 500 persons. Unofficial data show that total removals for fiscal year 2002 decreased by 18 percent compared to fiscal year 2001.
