It only took a few minutes and wasn't very helpful. I was told that my name check (primary applicant) was still pending and no visa number was assigned. And because of the pending status of the primary applicant, they refused to check for the derivative.

Previouly I had hoped that since my second fingerprint was done in May, it could be a good sign of cleared name-check. I may be wrong....
 
do need to open SR before taking infopass appointment?

It looks like infopass system asks for the service request and if it took more than 45 days from the date of SR then you can ask for infopass. Is that right?
 
No necessarily

No, You don't have to hold an open SR to request infopass. I actually don't have any open SR at this moment. You can make appointment simply for checking status.
