No there is no secret in making appointments using InfoPass.
Late in the evening and sometime in the weekends, I have seen such messages too..., my gusess is their system may be in maintenence..., try again after a couple of hours...

The funny thing is it let me use a zipcode in michigan and california but not from chicago land, if the system was down, guess it should not let me do for any other state, maybe I have to keep trying

I am having a same problem

I didn't know that I had to set up an appointment so I went to o local Chicago office today (10 W Jackson ).
Of course they did not let me in so I tried to set up an appointment over the web, but am getting that stupid message all the time.
I've contacted my lawyer and am waiting for her response,

The below number is USCIS E-filing customer support, this group will look into all technical problems of E-filing of EAD and AP. There is nothing wrong in contacting them and find out why InfoPass is giving trouble with some specific ZIP codes.....
The Phone number is 202-514-9713

Try in other computer with different network

At office, I tried and got appointment for myself. When I next tried for my wife, it says the wierd message that
" At this time, there are no information appointments available for the office in your area. Please try back again later. "
So, I asked my wife to try from home computer and she got the appointment. May be it allows only one from the same network(since I tried from my colleague's computer and it still gives the same wierd message).

Hope this helps.

I was able to get through late yesterday, after trying a number of times whole day.
I scheduled up an appointment for October 12 th, so in two weeks.
