Hello All,
I've been in this forum many times over the last 5 months, but never posted before. I learned a lot from here, thanks to everyone. I only wanted to post my interview experience so that others may find it helpful as I found their post.
Interview Date: 05/18/05 Indianapolis, IN 10:55AM
Arrived at the interview location at around 10:15, there were probably around 5-6 couples before us. Gave the notice of interview to the laday at the window and sat down. Got called in at 11:00AM, by a gentelman, I forgot his name it was X X JR. I remember the junior part but nothing else, I was a bit nervous.
Go to his office. He swears us in and offers a seat. We sit down, he asks us about the drive and makes some joke about the weather. Very pleasant fellow, put me to ease right away.
Asks me questions from 485, first and last name, mailing address, date & place of birth, employment, visa status, wedding date, wife's birthday.
Then asks my wife for her employment, if she still worked at the place mentioned on the affadavid, askf for 2005 tax retuns. We were RFE ed for that information, I told him that and he says oho, I got it there are 2 affadavit here and appologizes for looking over.
Asks me the standard Have you ever.... questions from the 485. I answered the part about being arrested (DUI 2005). He say's that's it? and I said that's one too many and we all laugh. He asked for certified court documents, which I had and gave him that along with the copy, he said he needs to keep the certified ones and gives me back the copy.
Thens asks us what joint documents we might have. we submitted copies of:
1. Rental Renewal Document
2. Electric Bill
3. Checking & Savings account statement
4. Cell Phone Bill
5. Cable Bill
6. Car insurance documents
Then he asks us in how we met, and we gave him the 5 line standard about how we met online, etc. He said oho really, awesome. Asked to see if we had any pictures, we had a few, we didnt have a whole lot of them, he said thats' fine.
We had pictures of us at Washington DC, he asked us how we like it etc. Picture of our cat, apartment he just flipped over them and said great.
Then he said everything looks good sir, but since you do have a criminal record I am not the one to approve the case, it has to go to a supervisor. The supervisor had the option to NOT take my recommendation, but I am recommending for approval.
Asked us if we had questions. I asked when the supervisor might be able to make a decision. He was about to say in a day or two, then changed his mind to say no more than 2 weeks, and 2 weeks after that I should get the card IF the supervisor has no objection.
He then went on to explain the conditional resident terms etc and made us sign we understood it and promise to file i-751. This made me feel better because, eventhough he has said the supervisor is the one to make the decision, he already explained and made us sign 751 conditions. I figured the supervisor probably in most case go with the judgement of the officer.
He gave me back my passport, I-94 and EAD. I asked him, if I should return it IF and WHEN i get my GC, he said no, keeep it as a souvenier for yourself and laughed.
He stood up, shook our hand and walked us to the door, and wished us a safe and pleasant trip back home (about 3.5hrs away). Time: 11:16, total elapsed time 16 minutes.
Overall it was a good experience and very easy. We were prepared for the worst so it was a peice of cake.
Got home, took a nap, checked my email and voila from USCIS, 2 notes.
I-130 has been approved.
I-485 a welcome letter was mailed 05/18 and you should get it in 30 days. It doesn't say approved for 485, just says we mailed a welcome letter, so I assume its approved. That was around 8pm central time. I assume, the supervisor looked over my file and approved it right after I left. I wish he had done so while I was there so I could get my passport stamped but we'll see what happens now.
