India Riisssiiiinnnnngggggg

I don't trust media specially Indian media.
So any thoughts/comments?
India Rising / Shining? How? Why? How fast? How far is it going to go? Is it going to beat US and if yes then how?
Does GC have no siginifance looking at the fact that our friends in India are now in better position than us?
Did we waste 5-10 years waiting for GC - all in pain , away from homeland and our own people?
Why such sudden and frightening real estate boom ? Why so much development all of a sudden?
Who is making money? If salaries have increased so has the cost of living? So who is gaining in this process?
Can we aford going back. Please do not forget the competition is so high out there and it is going to grow, your job is always at risk.

Place : Two Americans at IBM, USA .
Currency Conversion Rate: Rs.1 = $1000

Alex : Hi John, you didn't come yesterday to office?
John : Yeah, I was in Indian Embassy for stamping.
Alex: Oh really, what happened, I heard that
nowadays it has become very strict.
John : Yeah, but I managed to get it.

Alex : How long it took to get it stamped?
John : Oh, it was nasty man, long queue. That's why
it got delayed. I went there at 2 am itself and waited and returned by 4pm .
Alex : Really? In India , it is a matter of an hour to get stamped for USA .
John : Yeah, but that is because who in India will be interested in coming
to USA man, their economy has been booming.

Alex : So, when are you leaving?
John : Anytime, after receiving my tickets from the client in India and you
know, I will be getting a chance to fly Air- India. Sort of dream come true.
Alex : How long are you going to stay in India ?
John : What do you mean by how long? I will be settled in India,
my company has promised me that they will process my Hara Patta.

Alex : Really, lucky person man, it is very difficult to get a Hara Patta in India.
John : Yeah, that's why, I am planning to marry an Indian girl there.
Alex : But you can find lots of US girls in
Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai.
John : But, I prefer Indian girls because they are
beautiful and cultured.

Alex : Where did you get the offer, Bangalore?
John : Yeah, salary is good there, but cost of living is quite high,
it is Rs. 1000/- for a single room accommodation.
Alex : I see, that's too much for US people, Rs. 1/ = $ 1000/-. Oh
God! What about in Hyderabad , Chennai & Mumbai?

John : No idea, but it is less than what we have in Bangalore .
It is like the world headquarters of Software.
Alex : I heard, almost all the Indians are having
one personal Robot for help.
John : You can get a BMW car for Rs. 5000/-, and a
personal Robot for less than Rs. 7500/-.
But my dream is to purchase Ambassador, which costs
Rs.200000/- but has got a sexy design.

Alex : By the way, who is your client?
John : A pure Indian origin company, specializing in
Embedded Software.
Alex : Oh, really, lucky to work in a pure Indian
origin company. They are really intelligent and
unlike American Bodyshoppers who have opened their
Fly-by-night outfits in India. Indian companies pay
you in full even when you are on bench.
My friend Paul Allen, it seems, used his bench time to
visit Bihar, the most liveable place in India,
probably world. There you have full freedom and no strictions.
You can do whatever you want! I wonder how
that state has perfected that system.

John : Yeah man, you are right. I hope our America
also follows their footsteps.
Alex : How are you going to cope with their
language?
John : Why not? >From my school days I have been
learning Hindi as my first language here
at New York.At the Consulate they
proficiency in tested my Hindi and were
quite impressed by my cent percent score in
TOHIL (Test of Hindi as International Language).

Alex : So, you are going to have fun there.
John : Yeah, I will be travelling in the world's
fastest train, world's largest theme park,
and the famous Bollywood where you can see actors like,
Vrithik(son of Hrithik), and all.
Esselworld is also near to Bollywood.

Alex : You know, the Indian PM is scheduled to visit
US next year, he may then relax the number of visas.
John : That's true. Last month, Narayanamurthy Jr.
visited White House and donated Rs. 2000/- for
infrastructure development at Silicon Valley and has
promised more if we follow the model of Silicon City of Bangalore.
Bill Gates also got a chance of meeting him. Very lucky person.

Alex : But, Indian government is planning to split
Narayanamurthy Jr.'s Infosys & Sons.
John : He is a hard worker man like his father, he
can build any number of Infosys like this.
Every minute he is getting Rs. 1000/-. It seems, if you keep all his
money converted as Rs. 100/- notes you can reach Pluto.

Alex : OK, Good Luck John.
John : Same to you Alex. And don't go to Consulate
in a Kurta Pyjama because
they will think you are too Indianised and may doubt
you will ever come back and hence your
Non-Immigrant Visa may get rejected.
But don't forget to say "Namaste, aap kaise hai" to the Visa.
It seems he likes that and will not give you a visa if
you don't greet him that way.

See I don't like these kind of stories.
I am interested in next 5 years and current situation. What is making India rise right now, just IT?

Define "rising"?

Population, pollution, corruption, disease, crime, congestion, economic differences: They are all on the rise.

Dont bother about rediff or TOI. These are predicted by "C K Prahalad"

It's worth reading once.

Good question - what's rising? Are these things really rising? If yes then how come India rise?

Please don't refer to these articles.
I am trying to understand how is it rising - is IT (or if you include call centers) a major player, if yes then that is still something dependent on US. Can real estate bubble or boom be related to economic growth, if yes then is it in proportion?
What other factors are contributing to growth - Steel, Petroleum?

Does anyone know economic numbers? India vs US?
How many years it will take to reach Japan or US with growth of 9 % .?

per capita income will catch with Thailand in 30 years. Forget US or Japan.

I visit India almost every year. It's a lot better place than it used to be... but -by no stretch of imagination it's anywhere close to any developed nation.

The only way you can find out is by making a visit. There's no other way of getting the picture, no matter how many hours you spend reading/looking at numbers. It'll be like learning neurosurgery by reading a book.

How do you define better? Highrise building? Luxury appartments? Hightech rails and roads? Big malls? My question is how much percentage of population have come up from the poverty line? How many are able to utilise these facilities? Are all others problems gone - i.e. courruption, pollution, power/water problems, crime, law and order?
I am not interested in finding how better it has become, I am interested in finding the force behind this sudden growth? For me a village in India can be a better place than modern cosmetics - which I already have seen a lot in US.
I am looking at a plan where at some point of time I would like to move back to India.

Unfortunately my experience is different. Even I do visit almost every year. I find it a lot (a lot lot ) worse that it was before. The term "morality" is becoming extinct these days.

Whatever development we see in India is only "individual" development, there is no "social" development. For example, there is not a single new library in the city I come from past 30 years, while the popluation has grown from some 20,00,000 to over a crore. There is so much new construction going on but there are no new parks or playgrounds.

The drivers are many; at this time the most important is the low cost availability of plentiful labor. MNC execs look at India's large pool of grads and begin to wow at this same factor. But already there are concerns regarding the quality of these grads.
The problems you mention are still there; but that should not stop you from moving there as these are going to get better. When? That depends on the pace at which the economic reform is allowed to continue.

Real estate boom and other things that increase the cost of living are going to hurt the job inflow in the big scheme of things.

There can be number of predictive models that may tell you that India will be superpower by 20xx AD; but how much you can believe those models?
Experience that one gains by working in the US or developed countries is very useful whereever you eventually land. So, may be one should not renounce their Indian citizenship just yet.

SECURITY
----------------
***imagine....you have some issue with a hooligan.........will you go to the cops?? (i still feel that the cops just like to make money out of every troubled souls that come to them)
**will you feel comfortable if your women folk have to deal with the cops??
**can you go to the court to resolve a dispute??

property prices does not mean growth........anything with a such a steep growth is based on speculations.......you can take a look at NASDAQ for an example.....
everyone is buying because everyone else is buying.........and why should you not buy if you can make 10% within 2 months.....

GOVERNENCE:
--------------
it will take atleast another 50 years for our politicians to be somewhat accountable.....as long as 60% of population live hand to mouth and are not aware of the harm they are doing by electing goons in the name of religions and caste....
(even in usa....people vote based on religious beliefs and we all know by now the result of that...)

INFRASTRUCTURE:
------------------------
lets say we make rs. 50 lakhs/year.......but we spend 3-4 hours on commuting everyday......through pollution loaded roads..........will you prefer that??

as far as i know....a average joe like me has not done a great deal better than me being in india.....they are still coming to usa because of the savings potential.......but definitely some one from IIT would have done better in india rather than waiting with the same employer for 4-5 years....

some of my class mates with better grades and aptitude......joined infosys in 1995.....some of them are now being supported by infosys to launch a company called as www.onmobile.com ......they must have also made millions through stock options.......

some people working with them quit infosys....between 1997-2000 to come to usa......guess what.....few are still waiting for their GC...

but as far as i know.......for a poor person like me............india is not on top of the list..........things would have been different......if my family would have owned a multi-million business........

only two reasons why i would go back to india..........family and self dignity (i cant wait 4-5 years with a bad/ok employer/job)

If you say labor is the major player - then I would say these MNCs are forming extension of USA in India, a mini virtual USA in India which will only encompass approx. 25 % of Indian population and eventually consume resources - land, power etc. , and rest of India will be cut-off from them. That portion of India will be rising and rest majority of India ( or be precise Indians) will go down further to their plight. So you can still say India is rising.
