A friend of mine is on a TN Visa from Canada( He is a canadian National).
Can his company(employer) initiate a GC process ?????
Does he need to convert to a H1B....

Yes I believe they can. He does not need to be on a H1, although when he wants to adjust status, a TN renewal at that time could be trickier due to what the INS calls "immigrant intent". A great forum for TN issues can be found here:
