Important! New Procedures for Montreal

Montreal CP experts, please help:

I just talked to an NVC agent, and according to her you must submit originals or certified copies of all documents in Packet 3 (BC, MC, PCC, etc.). This was brought in effect recently. (People could submit photocopies earlier, and carry the originals to the interview.)

Has anyone submitted Packet 3 docs recently? Should one just send the originals, or get the certified copies from issuing agencies? If you look up cptracker.com, you\'ll find NVC lost documents of "Ravi Varma". We can be in serious trouble if something like that happens to us -- count on a setback of 2 months.

**Before anyone flames this post, please call NVC to confirm it yourself.**

Nothing new here.

Montreal is different from other consulates. NVC needs all docs with P3 before issuing P4.

Mamba

Yes, NVC always needed the docs. However, most people supplied photocopies, not the originals.

I dread the idea of sending originals and finding that they got lost in mail.

We should just follow the instructions in P3.
Sorry to ask you but why did you have to ask such question to the operator.

Ara2000

Because my P3 instructions said so, and I wanted to confirm it. Have been told that the state department issued a policy change that went into effect recently.

1. Please check your P3 instructions and let us know if it asks for originals / certified copies.

2. Please let us know on what date you received your P3.

My P3 was received on 11/27 and my lawyer is forwarding it to me. I will check the instructions. But if you have a lawyer let him certify that they are true copies of the originals. If not take them to notary public and get it certified. I will let you know what my instructions say.

Certified vs. Notarized

Ara2000,

A certified copy of a document can only be issued by the agency that issued the original document. The agency will also notarize it as part of the certification process.

A notarized copy of a document is a copy of the document that has been notarized by any notary public.

A certified copy has to be issued by the original agency. So, for your birth and marriage records, you can obtain the certified copies from the respective agencies that issued your birth and marriage certificates.

Thus, for a certified copy, you\'ll have to put in the same effort that you put in for the original.

Don\'t take this lightly. If you received P3 on 11/27, chances are that it requires original / certified copies. Call NVC and confirm!

Good luck.

Aren\'t there any other Montreal CP aspirants around? Could someone who filed P3 recently please share their experiences?

I spoke with my lawyer\'s paralegal and you were right it mentions original/certified. The paralegal said that the attorney has the power to certify documents as being "true copy of original". He will check it with his boss (the attorney) as to how to handle it on Monday. I will keep you posted.
By the way it looks like there\'s only me and you on this board.

I found these!! As far as I can see Torontorian is one of the latest people who got their interviews.

My lawyer just got my packet 3 for Montreal. He says there are conflicting instructions regarding whether to send original documents (birth certificate, pcc, etc.) or copies. Did any of you send originals in with packet 3, or did you send copies?

Send copies only to NVC (even police certificate), except for your
employment offer letter and I-134 (if applicable)

original docs

I too have December interview.
I did sent only photocopies of the docs
(marriage, birth certificates).

Eelavan

Did the instructions that came with your Pkt3 say anything about originals/certified copies. The instructions we have says originals/certified copies. Could you please check the information in your Pkt 3 and let us know. We\'ll appreciate it. Thanks

What happens after you submit the original documents?

So lets say that you decide to sent the original docs as per NVC request. My question is what happens to them? Are they sent back to the applicant before the CP interview? Or do the original documents get sent to the consulate in Montreal and the applicant retrieves them during his/her interview? If anyone knows the exact process, I would appreciate their input.

Thanks,

Ravi(attaboy)

Attaboy & Ara2000

Attaboy: as per NVC agent, the documents will be sent to Montreal. You will have to opportunity to demand them during the interview, be sure to provide photocopies for their records.

Ara2000: Both Torontorian and Eelavan seem to have their interviews in the month of December. Their P3s must have been submitted before October, the time when new policies went into effect.
Why don\'t you just call NVC (603 334 0700) to confirm? This board is useful for general information, but you always need to confirm such issues either with a lawyer or the appropriate government agency. If originals / certified copies are really needed, you\'ll get an RFE and it will unnecessarily delay your application. And no, your lawyer cannot certify photocopies.
Good luck!
