My girlfriend is a US citizen and she wants to settle down. If I decide to marry her how long would I have to wait until being able to apply for citizenship?

Officially I became a resident in 06. Could I apply in 09 and I would still have to wait 3 years from the day of our marriage?

As far as i know it wouldn't help, i'm married to a US citizen for 5 years now and still have to wait the 4 years.

I am not sure Asylee01 is correct. If you get married right now, you won't be able to apply in 2009, but should be able to apply in 2010. So you end up saving a year :)

This is directly from M-476:

Type:
If you are at least 18 years old and:
Are currently married to and living with a U.S. citizen;
and
Have been married to and living with that same U.S.
citizen for the past 3 years;
and
Your spouse has been a U.S. citizen for the past 3 years.

Time as Permanent Resident:
3 years

Continuous Residence:
3 years as a Permanent Resident without leaving the
United States for trips of 6 months or longer.

So all I would be saving up is one year.
Well...that would be nice anyways since sooner or later we'll settle down regardless.

But this is if you have obtained your GC through marriage.

Hmm... That wasn't mentioned in the docs I looked through. Where did you locate a rule that says 3 year wait period only applies to people who got GC through marriage?
