Impacts of taking up a JOB overseas while on Green Card

Hi all,

I am a permanent resident of US and work and live in New York. It is 3 years and 6 months since I received my permanent residentship.

Recently have received a job offer from a Geneva, Switzerland from a non profit organization of which US is a participant, and want to know what is the legal process for me to take this job without delaying or impacting my naturalization chances in the next 18 months.

I do want to become a US citizen as I become eligible and my questions in specific are as follows:

1. What are details behind re-entry permit ?
2. What relief it would provide if I make once in 3 - 6 months trip to US ?
3. I own a house in US and plan to have it in long term, will this help my intent of proving my residency continuance ?
4. What is the process for tax filing during the period I am abroad?

Kindly request responses from the forum members.

Many Thanks

JoeF,

Thank you for your response. I am looking for alternate options, and information in that regard would be appreciated.

Taking a job abroad is an indication that you abandoned your GC.

very very wrong answer.Any GC holder can take a job outside, and still able to preserve GC with filing formN470. You asshole SHUT Up

Dear Forum Members,

QUOTE]
1)
a)First check up whether your US organization comes under any of
allowed organization mentioned in application N-470.
b)If yes, study the N 470 application first. You should have been here continously at least an year before you can apply.(check N 470 as I only vaguely remeber). As you are 3 years cont. after your GC(as mentioned by you) you should be OK.
c)If a) and b) are OK,apply for Rentry permit and apply N 470--
which allows you to count that you have not broken cont. residency for Naturalization.
*but rider is, check the conditoons that you have not abandoned your residency.... like filing tax returns etc.etc(check USCIS site--they have list how to miantain ...and also kind of ..your job posting abroad to be temp. nature after which you will posted back to US,for example)
2)If you will not come under 1) above--
a)apply REP.
b) maintian conditions
** check the conditions that you have not abandoned your residency.... like filing tax returns etc.etc(check USCIS site--they have list how to miantain ...and kind of ..your job posting abroad to be temp. nature after which you will posted back to US.. )
In this case you will loose cont. resident duration but you will be admitted
if all other conditions are met.(Check also the provision under REP--once you return, your break period will be condoned for a partial duration (recapture) under certain conditions.Check USCIS site .)

Were you able to decide any of the 4 points you have mentioned? I have a similar situation. In case you file for re-entry permit will you provide the reason as you want to work abroad for given 2 years?
