Why Republicans Will Cave on Immigration Reform

Earl Ofari Hutchinson-AlterNet

Judging from the cold shoulder conservative Republicans gave President Bush when he called for a humane, balanced immigration reform law in a recent speech in Orange County, Calif., one would think these hardliners won't budge from their demand for a crackdown on illegal immigration. But eventually, most of them will.

With stratospheric gas prices, the Iraq quagmire, creeping inflation and Bush's Great Depression-era low approval ratings, the Republicans are in trouble. Polls show that if the national elections were held today, Democrats would grab a majority in the House and make deep inroads into the Republican majority in the Senate.

The political peril is so great that the GOP can't afford to alienate its one tenuous voting trump card: the Latino vote.

Bush knows this better than anyone else. He also knows that immigration reform is the key to getting those votes.

So its all about VOTES ... well thats what democracy is all about ... U need votes to get elected ...
Will Latinos get what they want --- Sí, se puede!" says all latinos. [Yes, we can ]..

Hi,
I think the article you posted express a very unilateral view. Here is one more balanced:
http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/homepage/abox/article_1127159.php

It is obvious Pres. Bush is underperforming. Except for the Iraq war though, Pres. Bush behaves like a democrat himself. Too bad most people fail to see that.

Given his poor performance, Republicans probably will pay a heavy price in November. However, if what Americans are saying materializes, a number of pro illegal aliens/amnesty incumbent senators could be wiped out in November, and that applies to democrat candidates as well. If the bill fails to pass now and senators wait until afte the elections, many of them could be out of office by them and the remaining would think twice before granting amnesty ? I don't know. That is just one possibility that the article below didn't address.

If such guest-worker/amnesty bill is passed, you will have possible consequences. If what most polls are true, a broad unsatisfied American base could elect someone like Sen. King or Tancredo as a President in 2008 ? This is just a more extreme possibility, but that is what can happen when you push people to its limits.

Republicans are between a Rock and a hard place.
They may loose Latino vote, but if they pass bill with amnesty then they rish loosing the White Conservative vote, which is basically their bread and butter.
But ofcourse they are politicians so you never know if they say one thing and do another or "hype" and "spin" the bill for something its not.

But how do Republic Party would loose White Conservative voters... they are not much affected by the Latinos taking up the low end jobs.

And most of the White Conservative voters do hire Latinos to take care of there farms, big ranches and there babies.

Well I guess Karl Rove is the ultimate decider :).

Whites are afraid of Latino's getting majority population in this country. They are worried about the political powers that Lation will have in a few years. They are scared one day US will become 3rd world country. They are afraid of Spanish becoming the national language .

They are afraid of the browning of America.

No stopping it ..

texancanadian,

You are absolutely right. The bottom line is that there is no stopping the Latino surge in the US. It is already to late. They are the leading minority right now and within 20 years they will hold a lot of political clout in this country. In another 70-100 years this will be not be the America it is right now. Thats the reality that people are not willing to accept. They are in denial and are trying to do things to prevent it. Sorry to say but its to late for that now. Whether 11 Million illegals (mostly Latinos) get amnesty or not, they are here and there is no way the US can get them out. This 11 million will grow to 30 million in 10-15 years if not more. So its better to face reality and make sensible decisions. Stupid decisions right now will only worsen the problem.

I think you got all points correctly, except one:
I don't really think it is about the "browning of America". It is about everything you just said. It is well known that the Latino political heritage and system is not a desirable one. Just look at how Latin America is. It is getting worse politically, at least from our capitalist, American point of view. Look at Bolivia, Venezuela and future Mexican candidates. Brazil and Argentina have a more moderate government, but still somewhat socialist and anti-American in the specific case of Brazil.

Now regarding the influence of Latino votes, I am not sure yet about that. What is the really percentage of Latinos who favor the amnesty for illegal aliens and support candidates ? Democrats are taking a risk on this, aren't they ?

Don't take for granted that legal Latinos want the illegal ones to come here.

I think it is still time to reverse this trend. Non-Latinos are still the majority in America. If enough Americans wake up to this problem and put a stop to this insane amnesty, America as we know may survive. On the other hand, If this amnesty or guest-worker program goes thru, I think you guys will be better offer in India in few years from now.

You should listen Sen. King speaking on the radio the other day. He certainly hit the nail, saying that Americans has the right to discuss about its destiny. It is true that few senators are sane in this fight. However, those senators have the reasoning on their side. Will they prevail ? We'll see.

Saras, I had this discusion with my American collegue. He did say that it is a fact that Americans think that the third world will dominate them and hence become protectionists. Retrogression is a measure to slow down immigration from countries like India etcc... So if we think situation will get better, it might get better, but to what extent we don't know. Most of us are here because we are filling up the job positions that require a particular skill. If we are not here, a local fills the position or the job goes overseas. So this is a reality we have to deal.

What you are suggesting is a conspiracy.... I don't know how true that is but if US politicians really believe in preventing "non-whites" from coming in and reducing the white american population count, then they should not create avenues for us to enter this country in the first place.
But why did they go ahead and create H, L, and other categories? Because they are pandering to their corporate interests that's why. And we all got suckered into it....

Yes man thats true...

For fact .. more in future and nevertheless in present... America needs more low skilled then Tech workers.
Baby Boomers are getting older ... so more health care workers..
Farmers will need more or less the same number of hands in future.
Construction might grow still there might be a big pull there.

These jobs needs to be done locally ... and yes not many americans do not want to do these works.

And as U said --- our type of job can go overseas very very easily.

ufo, the issue here is not with "non - whites". In general, Immigration is based and regulated on diversity, but India has been the biggest producer of highly skilled workers who are here on various visas. Americans wrote strong complaints against Indians filling up jobs on h1b visa and they getting layed off and replaced by Indian who is lowly paid and exploited. Most of the h1b hate groups targeted Indians as the biggest source of lowly paid skilled workers who are not only reducing their wages but also taking away their jobs both inland and overseas. This is one main reason for the slow crackdown on skilled workers.
American businesses claim they need h1b workers because they do not find local workers with the skill. Thats why h1b and l1 stays. But these companies do not really bother if we are going to get green cards because they can have people on h1bs.
Businesses would love to have skilled people working their ass off and reap profit and therefore h1b visa and l1 visa would never be controlled. They wont gain much from a green card holder.
Yes it is true that we are here because businesses want us here.
Slowing down of perm visa procesing is a result of
lack of representation + protectionist outcry

Microsoft always says at Washington --- we need more H1b ... Green Card .. opps they never care ...

What might be the reason -- ?

........ wonder if microsoft said they need more GC ... the visa number would have bumped up early on ... hmm the attorneys at microsoft might be saying ahhhh we are fine with EAD ... atleast the guy is working.
