Immigration Bills dead in Congress

Kennedy-Mccain bill is dead in congress & Hagel-Martinez bill which also had a guest worker program.

Looks like Senate will go on a break for 2 weeks and return and pass the House border security legislation without the guest worker program and also removing the fact that it would make illegal aliens into criminals.

So now our hope is that the 4 year U.S Citizenship ammendment is added to the legislation and I feel it may be added since most of the bill is negative.

To Wantmygcnow

do you think there will be some kind of compromise after 2 weeks to pass

the immigration bill in the senate?

the reason i ask you this question is that there is a large protesting going on on monday, and there is a planned nationwide strike by lations on may 1,

this planned strike for one day may shut down the economy,

all i want from this bill is the citizenship amendment, this will make me eligible for naturalization on may 16 2008, then i can move outside america without worry about coming back

The majority of republicans don't want any guest worker plan. Just few who have aspirations of becoming the President like Frist & Specter want to bring the Latino vote on their side for decades.

The strikes can happen and Republicans won't budge. Its against their morals to make it easy for Immigrants. If anything passes, it will first introduce lots of legislation that is just not fair and then offer few "limited" ammendments to help immigrants.

I think the 4 year citizneship ammendment has a good chance of passing ONLY if no guest worker plan is introduced.

In the citizenship forum they said the 2 ammendments (citizenship expedition + guest worker) go together. If one dies the other dies too. Is that true?

They are 2 separate ammendments introduced by 2 different Senators. The Citizenship ammendment is introduced by a Republican and won 91-1..so majority vote on it.

My theory is that if Guest worker passes, Expedited citizenship will not be included.

Sorry your fight doesn't help any of us or any of the LPRS. I do not see illegal aliens saying that LPRs who have to wait to apply for their spouse should also be treated fairly. Every Asylee who is waiting in line is also at jeopardy since if guest worker plan is passed, the lines for getting a gC will get long and mostly asylees will suffer since their cases were backlogged and most haven't been processed.

If this fight is for every immigrant to be treated fairly, I am with it. I am not with a fight which only certain class of immigrants.

Hey WANT,, What will happen to the PR spouse? Are they going to do something for that or we are all stuck in a mess?

NASRMOBIN,

Senator Frist bill had backlog reduction for spouse of LPR's. In simpler words, realtives of U.S Citizens are currently counted against the 480,000 cap which reduces the numbers to 280,000 per year for LPR spouses of which 70 percent are used.

So his bill makes it that those visas 280,000 are not counted against the cap. This will shorten the wait from 4.5 years to maybe 2.5 years

Hoping V Visa gets passed..thats the solution

If that bill passes, EVERYTHING will be backlogged, and EVERYONE LPR, USC will be affected, we all know how speedy our beloved INS is, if all these 20 - 30 millions of illegals will be dumped to the system, it will take forever to get any application processed.

I don't think it will ever pass. They won't allow illegals to legalize that easy. It's just a personal opinion.

Picture 11 million people put into the current system where 100,000 plus asylees are still waiting = Nightmare.

Reagan's Bill

I will tell you what they are planning, they are going to revive Reagan annesty bill to be alive again..

Be careful for what you wish for wantmygcnow!!!
even the "4 year U.S. citizenship ammendement " is negative...because it can be the beginnig of the end of many people "citizenship dream".
Just look around the world :france introduce a law that ..only high educated foreigner people with perfect french ( speaking /writting) can be allowed to became a resident...
here in U.S. ... they may ask one day for doctorat degree ...as requirement for citizenship!

United States is a country of immigrants unlike countries in Europe. Europe has always been scared of Immigrants so it doesnt surprise me they are making it more tougher..

Lets not compare the xenophobes in European Union to the United States government.
