Illegal Immigration and GC

As per the above article, if i get laid off the I become an illegal alien. If i am more then 5 years in US then can I apply for citizen ship?

i think you need to be on status (and not out of status as in illegal allien).
you need to apply for greencard and to have it for 6 years before you can apply for citizenship.

from the arctcle you mentioned.

i think you have to become legal here... like to have a temporary guest worker or working visa. Then if you have legal status here then you can apply for greencard. And then after 6 years then you can apply for citizenship.
