What about people who are staying here legally for more than 5 years and paying tax (a lot ....) every year ? Isn't it better to become "illegal" before this bill becomes law and "win" green card instantly rather than waiting for years to get one (that too is not sureshot) "legal way" (and always keep worring about not falling out of status). It sucks..... sucks... damn politics.

Congressman Richard Gephardt, the minority leader of the House of the Representatives, introduced H.R. 5600 entitled "Earned Legalization and Family Unification Act of 2002" on October 10, 2002. This bill includes two components: One is to legalize illegal aliens who have resided in the U.S. for 5 years and at least for two years, the aliens worked and paid tax. The Second component is to remove quota limitation for immigrant relative petitions for the relatives of U.S. citizens. Currently other than the spouse and children under 21 years of a U.S. citizen, other relatives of U.S. citizen are subject to the annual quota and F1, F3, F4 categories are heavily backlogged in priority dates. The legalization component has been flying around as a rumor in the immigrant community for quite some time. Now here it is.
Without doubt, this bill is targetting at attracting support of Hispanic community through the legalization proposal and support from the U.S. citizen voters who have been separated from their sons, daughters, brothers and sisters for long time because of the quota backlog. It is hoped that the bill does not lose attention once November 5 election is over.
