Folks,

It is absolutely clear now, if you get called for 2nd Fingerprinting due to illegible set of first fingerprinting, you have to initiate process of obtaining Police Clearance Letter in order to save time and frastration later.

FP 1st notice comes within 3 weeks of submitting the application and everybody basks in the glory on how perfectly they completed the application and how fast the things are moving. It may very well happen that joy is shortlived once notice for 2nd fingerprinting comes which is surprisingly high % for parents who have worked hard for 50+ years and lost their fingerprints (literally) in the process.

The surprising thing is Department of Homeland Security which controls the security of homeland does not seem to have an access to local police stations, so they will send an RFE AFTER 3 months when you are ALL SET to receive the GC, that they want police clearance. To me: it sounds like Airforce 1 does not have access to gas stations so they land on highways to fill up the gas for presidential fleet and then take off :-)

So, it would be wise to:
1) Get such a letter from local police station from the city you lived in USA

Additionally one may consider:
2) Keeping the phone number and address of senator handy to escalate the request.

3) Contact the local embassy even before sending the application and requesting the police clearance certificate.

4) Visiting the police office in the motherland that gives such certificate before boarding flight to USA.

The idea is not to press the panic button but be forewarned as many of these steps may not be possible for many people once they cross the timeline.

In most of the cases reported so far, STEP # 1) has sufficed which is a good news, but who knows the future.
