like them losing an IL, for e/g:

can one just call the CS and ask a drone to see if an IL has been sent?
or is this something that you need an IO on the phone for?

I just wanna say "I want to make sure that nothing has been sent because I seem to have a lot of trouble with my post office losing crap all the time..." etc.
would a CSR do something?
if not, what shall I do exactly, in order to know where I'm standing right now? (=to get an IO on the phone)
(I know there were several methods suggested, but I've lost track of which ones work and which ones don't anymore...)

When was the last time you spoke to an IO? Have you ever spoke with one? The last trick I heard was to call the CSR and tell them you never received a NOA..maybe that will work for you..... Keep your head up battle...... you will make it through this... we all will....

does the online case status get updated when an IL is issued and sent to the applicant?

It is supposed to but its flaky. My case status hasn't been updated since December 2006, even though I have received several letters from USCIS including the IL.

I called USCIS customer service recently to see if my OL got lost in the mail. They have no way to tell if your letter got lost in the mail but they can inform you if the letter has been returned to USCIS.

I am not sure why any letter would be returned to USCIS but thats what I was told by the rep.

Just schedule an Infopass . they will tell you specific when your Oath Ceremony will be. I did that too when i was concerned about my letter not being recieved. The IO told me i will be getting a letter a month before the date he told me i will be having my OAth Ceremony and i got the letter. i saved myself the hassle of waiting . I was sure of the Oath date and the date the IO said i will get the notice in the mail , and i got it. So save yourself the hassle schedule an infopass and all your concerns will be taking cared of

You should first start tracking other people on the board who had a PD close to your own. This way you know when to expect the IL. If others are getting ILs and you haven't gotten it, wait 2 weeks then call the helpline. They will be able to tell you if the IL was sent.
The web status changes to "retrieval failed etc" message for some but this is not consitent or reliable for others.
