Hi All,
Today, I received walk-in iEAD at SanFrancisco District INS office.

Filing Details:

1. Concurrent filing( I-140 and I-485 filed together), RD 10/04/2002 ND 10/08/2002
2. I-140/AP not yet approved. FP done. I-140 RFEed. Not yet replied.
3. First time iEAD. Never received EAD before.

Process Details:
1. Reached INS at 6.00 am. Security clearance at about 6.45am.
Presented a photoId(Passport/driver's license) for security.

2. At the reception, we presented passport, copy of EAD receipt and copy of I-485 receipt(not sure if this was needed as the person in/charge at reception did not look at I-485 at all). We were asked to make a copy of Passport first page( ID/Photo page ) and Visa/I-94 page. (Remember to take these photocopies along, as it will save time in first level of screening). We were given a token with counter/serial number.

3. First level of screening (the officer at the counter) collected these papers when our number was called and asked us to wait again.(while they do background processing , I guess). After some time, called out our name and gave a small token to go to upstairs for photo and EAD card preparation.

4. Again wait(This wait is the longer of all) to be called. Smile for the pose and collect your iEAD after some time.

5. Took about 4 1/2 hours (in and out).

6. No tricky or any questions about anything at all(except for alternative/other names).

7. No fees required.

Local Details:

1. Parking is a big and costly issue. There is parking space just round the corner on sansome . But that costs about $22 to $27 for few hours. There is a cheaper parking on washington just two blocks down the road( between montgomery and kearny) ,still be ready to shell out $15. Better if you can find other cheaper parking or better still BART/Bus.

2. San Jose INS office will not allow anyone living outside their serving counties for iEAD.(see INS web for their serving counties) This is verified before you enter the center.

3. Take an umbrella as it may rain while you stand in line outside INS office.

Wish you all best luck.

on friday jan 24, i was there at sfo field office to get my iEAD. this thread has been very helpful. accordingly, i prepared the copies.

what i believe happens, when the officer collects the papers (at first level of screening), is to check the case status. i believe they see if the case has been approved or not. if this case has not been approved, they just print out some papers, staple all the papers together. on my application, the officer wrote "interim" and highlighted the word "interim" again. i donot know what this means but the officer wrote "wsc" on the application.

then the papers are placed in a "out tray". from there another officer, collects these papers and takes them to the second floor. on the second floor, the papers are sorted out, a printout is index finger print and a photo are taken and the iEAD is given out.

about my experience, it has been bad. at 11:30, for the first level the officer called me. looked at my papers. waited and fiddled around the computer for another 3 minutes. then she told me "i need to go for my lunch. i will be back at 12:30 pm, come back at 12:30". gave me a fast pass. then vanished.

at the same time, more than 4-5 people i know had their cases pass the first level of screening. i was standing there.

at 12:45 pm, the papers were collected, the observations were noted. this officer, put my papers in a different tray. i was waiting in the second floor office (and shuttling between the first floor office and the second floor office) till 4:30 pm.

by 12:45pm, all the 4-5 people who moved ahead of me at different counters had their iEADs. also, while waiting for the officer to have lunch, i have noticed that there were a couple of fast passes apart from me.....

finally, i told the officer who physically moves the papers from the first floor to the second floor about my missing papers. she told me go back to the first floor and talk to the supervisor there.

finally, as i came back to the second floor, i spoke to or atleast tried to speak to different officers and was turned away by all of them... finally, one officer took pity on me, i guess, she started asking a few questions...then finally dug out my papers. i rushed upstairs and got my iEAD.

during the time, i have been waiting at level 1 and level 2, i have noticed that almost all the people who have been handled by the officer who handled my work had their papers "missing".

a bad experience....at 4:30 pm, my wife noticed that this officer was handing out a couple more fastpasses for the next working day.

my observations at the SFO office;

1. no one in the interview room was there in the room for aos applications/interviews. this room is 200c in the second floor office and the room was deserted. i doubt the "freeze has been lifted " theory.

2. there were announcements for special registration at regular intervals. the announcements ran something like this "if some one has been there for special registration, please come to the front of the line". i have seen only 3 people appear for the special registration all through the afternoon. all the three of them went home.

this has been my experience....if my papers could be lost for 4 hours moving from one floor to the other...until, some one found out for me....i wonder what will happen to my i-485 in cold storage.....

Got iEAD in San Jose

I got it in San Jose office and it went smoothly, tough it took more than 4 hours.

But I got another question to ask you guys here.

What happens when this iEAD expires in 8 months and we still did not receive the REAL (not interim) EAD by then ?

Can we get another iEAD for 8 more months or do we need to file another EAD (i765) application before 90 days of the iEAD expiration date?

Anybody knows the answer?

Thanks.

Wife just got the EAD from SFO.
Entered in at 7:15 am. Was out by 12.30. iEAD issued for 6 months.

Don't know why it is only for 6 months?

Thanks for the great info here.
