Hi -

if I add my husband to your application now ( I just got my PERM approved, and I am about to file for I140 and I185)... my "husband to be" is going to go back to school. Do any of you know if he will have problems getting scholarship/loan. People have told him that to get a loan/scholarship, he needs to be on an F1 status.... Is this true?

Thanks again for your help!

What status is he in? I don't think he can even joing a school without a pending AOS or appropriate F1. The scholarships vary a lot, I got one that is for international students so I guess you were required to be an F1, I bet there are other ones that do not require that. What type of loans are you looking for? He's gonna need a good co-signer and even then, it's really hard for F1 or other status people to get any kind of loan i.e. citiassist.

The only way he will be able to get "private loans" will be if he has a social security and valid F1 status along together with a co-signer. Some private banks do not requiere the student to be in F1 status, but the loan will be mainly in the co-signer... the cosigner has to be a LPR or US Citizen and have good credit. Most of the US banks do not loan money to international students... unless they have a good cosigner with excellent credit.

If he wants to apply for federal loans and scholarships, he will have to apply for FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) first, but he will be desqualified when his status is verified by the DHS... because he is not yet a "elegible noncitizen"

"Elegible noncitizens" are individuals that hold one of the following status: US Citizens, LPR, Refugees, or Asylees.

He is currently under an H1 and he is about to swicth to F1.

However we are getting married and thought we would add him to my GC application. But it seems that you are saying that if he adds himself to my application, he won t be able to get a loan... since he won't be on an F1.

Correct?

You should call the school. What kind of loan is he applying for? Scholarship wise, call the school, I do think he needs to be an F1 for an international student scholarship but I think he would be eligible for the other ones. About the loan, I really think it depends on the bank, call the bank and get a good co-signer. It is very hard for a non resident to get a loan though. And he can't get any federal loans.
