I485 filing for GC with different lawyer

My I-140 has been inprocess. I have receipt of I 140. Can I file I-485 with outside lawyer (not from my company)? The reason is my employer will take lot of time(atleast 8 to 12 months) to file after giving I-485 papers. He does not want us to leave the company so soon. So if anyone can please help me if you know any lawyers who took these kind of cases. I contacted one of the lawyer and he said that he needs the copy LC to file I-485 which my employer will never provide. My employer is taking the advantage of the situation. Please let me know if anyone has filed I-485 like this.

Yes you can file for 485 yourself or by hiring your own lawyer. The forms for filling 485 are quiet easy to understand and simple to file.

If you plan to hire a lawyer, hire a competent lawyer who could walk you the rough the process.

But be aware that if your employer withdraws you 140, your 485 will be void.

Think well before you decide to do it

If your employer finds out and withdraws your I-140, do you have time, patience and mental ability of going through this crazy and sense less GC cycle again?

I am in the same boat and i did file through different lawyer.

you don't need copy of approved LC as long as you have copy of the receipt for I140.

But it will be helpful if you have forms 750A and 750B which are attached to approved LC. This is where your Job description,Title and salary are mentioned. These will come handy when you change jobs after 180 days and you have to inform the USCIS about the job change.

You can get these forms through Freedom of Information Act
search the uscis website for that.

what believe_in_self said is true. But i took the chance because my employer knows that once I140 is filed it is taking 9 months to one year. so he is gonna just sit back and rake money on you.
