Shredder

The Immigration and Naturalization Service is investigating allegations that documents mailed to its Laguna Niguel service center in Orange County, California, may have been improperly shredded by a Texas-based database contractor, Datatrac Information Services. A spokesperson for Datatrac who declined to give his name said the firm’s contract with the government prohibited speaking to the media. Datatrac and the Virginia-based SEI Technology Inc. are subcontracted by JHM Research and Development of Maryland, which got a $325 million contract with INS in January 2001 to staff the nation’s four regional immigration service centers. The INS Office of Internal Audit launched the investigation in April when two INS employees relayed suspicions of improper shredding. One knowledgeable source said the INS officials recovered about 90,000 pieces of mail apparently destined for the shredder. The INS has suspended shredding at the Laguna Niguel facility and is fielding calls from applicants from four Western states who fear their paperwork may have been destroyed. The agency claims it will work with attorneys and advocates to help reconstruct files if necessary. (Los Angeles Times 5/12/02)

If the check has been cashed

get a copy from the bank, it will have your receipt number. If not, there is a great possibility that your petition has been lost or shredded. You should take immediate action, talk to INS.
