I20 with expired visa

Hello... everyone.
I have a question about my expired visa and what are the chances of getting it renew or reinstated or whatever you call it.
I have a legal status of studying in US with my I-20.
I am currently studying in New Jersey and in the process of earning an Associate Degree

I came to US with the AUPAIR program few years ago (2 and half years). At that time I was only issue 1 year visa.

I then change my status to a student in US before the VISA expired. I got a I-20 which is a legal status to study in US. I haven't been back to Thailand to renew my VISA or Obtain a F1 VISA.

Now the main issue is I am planning to go back to Thailand in August 2009, since my VISA is expired. Is there any chances of me getting a F1 VISA with my current I-20 status. What will the problem be?

Please help... I am in the middle of my studying for the Associate Degree and not sure what's gonna happen if I go back to Thailand for a visit.

any comment will be appreciated. :)

You need to be able to prove why you will return to home country after completion of your degree. It can be done by showing property, family ties, job etc. in home country. In any case there is a risk associated with it.

Also take a letter from the registrar's office showing that you are currently registered.
Have a good answer for why you changed to F1 in the US.

What kabkaba and drMBA said, plus don't forget to get your I-20 signed by the DSO! Even with a valid visa that you will obtain in Thailand (or anywhere outside the US), you still need an I-20 with a valid DSO signature to re-enter the US.
