I can easily fit the first 2 prongs of the NIW, i.e. intrinsic merit and the national in scope). I can easily link my studies to neurological diseases and have recommendation letter that states clearly the importance of my research in treatment of such diseases.
here are my qualifications:
12 articles (10 first author)
1 book chapter
honorary membership
4 minor prizes (travel awards and student/postdoc research award)
review of 3 articles in 2 different journals
an article (like news and views; but it is more neutral) written about one of my articles
few excellent recommendation letters (mostly from independent
now I would really appreciate it if you could tell me how to present my case and if you have any suggestions or comments, that would be really great
thanks a lot
Your quals are pretty good for NIW.
I am going to list a set of questions. Try your level best to answer as many of them as possible. Get as much evidence as possible to substantiate all your claims (emails, letters of correspondence etc). I believe it will help your case.
1. # of papers seem alright. But what about citations? How many do you have? How many of these citations quote your paper and describe its usefulness? How many of those citations quote you by name or your paper? These issues are very important. Get evidence for this.
2. Are you the first author? Or a co-author? Why were you asked to write a book chapter? Did you get the invitation to write the book chapter?
3. What is the importance of this honorary society? What is its criteria? How well is it known?
4. Minor prizes like travel grants and other student awards are utterly useless.
5.Why were you asked to write the review paper? Did you get the invitation to write the paper?
6. These newspaper articles cite your work by name? Or does it merely refer to the subject of your work? If it is the latter, it is pretty much useless? If it is the former then they would cite you by name or your work.
Recommendation letters, especially from independent experts, are extremely important. Request these writers to cite your accomplishments and a few lines of their worth. For example, you can try and get an independent or semi-independent letter to mention that you are a member of an honorary society and a few lines on how good the society is, how difficult it is to become its member blah, blah, blah.
Although you dont need international recognition, it will be very helpful if you can get recommendation letters from scientists in Europe, Asia etc.
good luck
