I140 applied and H1b expiring

Hi THis is for a friend. He has applied for I140 and has the receipt numbers. His 6 years on H1 are almost up. What is his recourse, i.e can he apply for extension of H1 based on I140 or does he have to apply for I485 immediatly and work based on EAD.

he can apply for 7th year extension of H1B based on labor approval( & filing of I140). I have one friend who has got an extension under similar circumstances. There is absolutly no need for concurrent filing ( & EAD as well). However, concurrent filing is always beneficial.
